A Step-by-Step Rasam Recipe

Here is a step-by-step guide to making hot and tempting rasam.

Ingredients List

You will find all the ingredients by searching for ‘mart near me’ and selecting an online delivery service.

  • Chopped Tomatoes: 4
  • Ghee: 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds: ½ tsp
  • Curry leaves: 2 sprigs
  • Rasam powder: 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric: ½ tsp
  • Salt
  • Tamarind paste: ¼ tsp
  • Cooked Toor dal: 3 tbsp
  • Garlic: 4 pods

Instructions to Cook

  • Blend 4 roughly chopped tomatoes into a smooth paste. You can add ½ cup of water while blending to make the paste smoother.
  • Take a deep pan and heat it over medium heat.
  • Add ghee to the pan, and then add mustard seeds and curry leaves to it.
  • You can also add a pinch of asafoetida to the tempering.
  • Add ½ cup of hot water to the tempering.
  • Strain the tomato paste into the pan. The water added earlier will prevent the tomato mix from spilling around.
  • Pour the tomato pulp added to the tempering into a blender jar with ½ cup of water and blend again.
  • Strain the mix again in the pan. Do the same again, this time using ¼ cup of water.
  • Once you strain the tomato pulp, add it to the pan and turn on the flame.
  • Add 1 tbsp rasam powder to the mixture and stir well.
  • Season with salt as needed and stir in the tamarind pulp.
  • Let the rasam simmer gently over low heat
  • Take 3 tbsp cooked dal. It must be cooked sufficiently to have a smooth, mushy texture.
  • Mash the dal with ½ cup of water. Mash the dal using either a whisk or the back of a spoon until smooth
  • Filter the dal and pour just the strained liquid into the tomato mixture. Repeat the process of straining the mashed dal again with ½ cup water.
  • Crush the garlic pods with a mortar and pestle and add them to the rasam.
  • You can then taste the dal for salt and spice and adjust the quantity accordingly.
  • Increase the heat and allow the rasam to boil for about 5 minutes.
  • Serve it hot with steamed rice or drink it as a soup.

Conclusion

The comforting rasam recipe is a must-try for beginners. The easy recipe is simple and quick to make with only a handful of ingredients. If you don’t have any, simply search ‘mart near me’ on your smartphone, and you will find the ingredients there.

With the convenience of instant delivery apps, you do not even have to step out of your house. You can get the ingredients delivered to your doorstep in just a few minutes.
