Check for Dirt and Debris

The buildup of soil and waste is one of the principal reasons for a stuck latch of a door. In due course, dust, dirt, and other particles can accumulate and cause the door latch to be stuck closed. A mild cleaning solution and a soft cloth should be used to wash the latch and the surrounding area in order to fix that. Make sure you dry the catch well before trying to open the door.

Lubricate the Latch

If the cleaning of the latch doesn’t work, the reason can be improper lubrication, which makes it get stuck. The latch can be lubricated by using silicone-based lubricant or a graphite powder. Use the lubricant frugally to prevent the residue buildup that would attract more dust and dirt.

Adjust the Strike Plate

The strike plate is the metallic object on the wall that the latch of the door meets when the door is closed. Misalignment of the strike plate leads to the latch getting jammed. You can also try to adjust the strike plate by unfastening the screws and moving it slightly to make sure it is aligned properly with the latch.

Tighten Loose Screws

Another likely cause of a stuck door latch is screws that are not firm. The screws of the latch and strike plate can loosen over time, leading the latch to jam. If so, just tighten the screws with a screwdriver and try opening the door again.

Use a Flathead Screwdriver

If the latch remains in a locked position, you can attempt to release it manually with a flathead screwdriver. Place the screwdriver into the hole on the side of the latch and press it towards the frame side. This will release the latch and you will be able to open the door. But this is just a patch and you must solve the root issue not to let the latch jam again.

Replace the Latch

When all else is done, it will be the time to change the door latch. With time, door latches wear out and sometimes need changing. A new latch can be bought and installed by the owner himself using a screwdriver and the manufacturer’s instructions.

In conclusion, a stuck door latch is an irritating and sometimes even a dangerous issue. Nevertheless, using these solutions, you can resolve the problem and have your door work fine. Do not forget to regularly clean and lubricate your door latch in order to avoid the future latching. If the problem continues, do not be afraid to consult a professional locksmith. The price of your safety and comfort is worth it.
