A lot of UK firms go live on Odoo and feel good about it. Standard apps, a few settings tweaked, staff trained inside a week. A year or two later there are more people, a second warehouse, maybe another company entity, and the setup that fitted so well is being worked around. Nobody decides to outgrow it. The irritation just builds.
Nine signs follow. Spot several and it’s time to talk to an Odoo Customization Company.
1. The Spreadsheet Beside Odoo
A spreadsheet that exists to fill a gap Odoo can’t is the earliest sign. It might hold pricing rules, commission sums or a production schedule. It works fine until the one person who maintains it goes on holiday.
2. Fields Doing the Wrong Job
Teams under pressure start typing instructions into a notes field or reusing a field for something else. “Put the delivery slot in the reference” is a workaround that can survive for years. Reports built on those fields slowly stop being believable.
3. VAT and Making Tax Digital
HMRC’s Making Tax Digital rules mean VAT returns have to go through compatible software, and the sources I read didn’t agree on how much Odoo covers natively in each version. Third-party modules fill the gap, such as a paid HMRC VAT integration listed for versions 13 to 19. A listing shows which versions a module supports. It doesn’t show whether anyone still maintains it, so testing on your own version comes first.
4. Bank Feeds That Don’t Fit
Odoo’s documentation has described automatic bank sync through providers like Plaid and Yodlee, and an older edition listed fully supported countries without the UK among them. Third-party connectors for UK banks are listed for recent versions. If reconciliation is still manual in your business, this is probably why.
5. Approval Rules Odoo Doesn’t Enforce
Purchases over a limit needing two signatures, a discount needing a director’s nod. When those rules live in email chains, Odoo isn’t enforcing them. That’s a small piece of Odoo ERP Customization, often a few hours of work, which is a good reason to do it early.
6. Several Companies, One Mess
Open a second legal entity, or buy one, and you quickly find out how intercompany invoices and shared stock behave. Pricing guides say multi-company support sits in Enterprise. Either way it needs planning, and rarely works as hoped on day one.
7. Reports Nobody Believes
If the board pack is built by exporting and merging, the built-in reports no longer answer the real questions. Custom reports on clean data are among the most requested changes. Also among the most valuable.
8. Integrations Held Together by Hope
Links to a courier, a payment provider or a warehouse tool often start as quick fixes. Odoo’s documentation says the external API is only on Custom plans, and that XML-RPC and JSON-RPC have been deprecated since version 19.0 in favor of JSON-2. A connector written a few years back may need rebuilding.
9. Upgrades Everybody Dreads
The big one. Odoo’s own guide to upgrading a customized database says custom modules get tested on a fresh database of the new version first, and lists the usual breakage: renamed fields, moved views, changed syntax, methods that no longer exist. A business that’s put off upgrading for years because “the customizations might break” has outgrown its setup, whether it admits it or not.
Customization or Configuration?
Not every fix is code, and this is where a good partner earns its fee. Studio in Enterprise handles light changes, and plenty of gaps close with settings alone. Reaching for Odoo ERP Customization too early is a classic mistake, because every line of custom code has to survive the next upgrade. A sensible Odoo Customization Company says so before it quotes any development.
Where to Start
With an audit. What’s already customized? What do people actually use? What does each problem cost per month? Rank them and do the top few. Odoo ERP Customization works better as a short, ranked list than a wish list. BiztechCS, an Odoo Ready Partner, tends to begin that way, with the existing modules and the upgrade path, before any new development gets scoped.
Hit one or two of the nine and you’re normal. Hit five and you’ve probably outgrown it already.
